Motor Insurance - Types of Coverage

Motor Insurance can be utterly confusing, especially when the competition is so fierce and the companies in trying to vie for the pie are introducing newer and newer coverage options. Small print or fine print has started to cover more than half the policies and it is a big waste of time and energy going through all of it.

This article is intended to keep you in good stead while looking to buy insurance. While helping you to understand the various kinds of coverage available, this article also points out to certain facts and tips where you can reduce your motor insurance premiums.

There are essentially five different kinds of coverage available in the insurance industry. Below is the short description of each of these types which could come in use when you try and select the coverage while buying.

Collision Coverage - This kind of coverage is designed to cover the repairing cost of your car in case of collisions irrespective of who has been at fault. When you purchase a new car or you lease a new car, the motor dealers would need you to have this coverage. In the event that you are shopping for motor insurance on your old car, you can take a risk and keep this option partly in deductibles to reduce your premiums.

Comprehensive Coverage - This coverage is designed to protect your car from theft, vandalism and fire. It also covers damage from natural disasters like hurricanes and hailstorms. This coverage is essential since almost all coverage is not man made. However, if you are not living in a hurricane prone or earthquake prone area, you can take a small risk by listing then as deductibles and saving a few dollars in the bargain.

Liability Coverage - This kind of insurance coverage helps you to pay your legal fees or any claims made against you if your motor is involved in an unfortunate accident resulting in injuring or killing someone or cause damage to someone's property. This again is a tailor-able coverage where you can have deductibles. Depending on your assets you can have deductibles inversely proportional to them.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage - This form of motor insurance coverage helps pay for damages done to yourself, the passengers with you and your car that arise out of any accidents caused by uninsured or underinsured drivers or any hit-and-run drivers. Many people live without insurance and the accident rates are on the rise and hence this coverage is good to have. Many drivers are careless and uninsured and this kind of motor insurance coverage helps protect you. You could eliminate this coverage totally if you have ample medical insurance coverage.

As I said before, motor insurance is a complicated matter. I hope I have been successful in explaining the coverage in a broad sense. However, please go through the details of the policy that you would like to opt for before buying.
