Entry-level info. about : web hosting company.

  • A good web hosting seller will give their clients as much control over their account as possible. They should let you into the SSH (secure shell), .htacess files, php.ini settings, cron job, and PERL, PHP, and Python support. Even if you're not sure what these things do, they are important and you may need them later on for configuring your website.
  • Some sellers also offer special features for their clients in the control panel; free applications like shopping carts, blogs, wordpress, Gallery, ZenCard, PhpGedView, OpenX, phpB, Joomla, MediaWiki, forums, bandwidth tracker, hit counter, etc. This will be useful so you won't need to seek out or purchase third-party software. You should also look over the disk space, POP email accounts, scripting languages, databases, etc. Check if everything is run on a Windows or Linux platform, because .asp runs on one and .php runs on the other. Some hosts allow for both. With multiple employees, you may need to give each their own separate ID. You should always try to find a plan that has what you need, instead of one that offers a lot of useless extras that wrack up the price. Even a cheap plan will have the basics needed to create a static website.
  • You pick a plan to support the bandwidth according to the amount of traffic you expect. If you're a large company, you might even consider looking into a dedicated or virtual private server to help with peak hours. If you're not an expert, get a managed solution. There are lots of web host vendors, but you must find a reliable one. Keep in mind that if it seems too good to be true, that means it's going to be. You also want reliable and polite customer service, preferably 24/7. A dedicated server is more secure than a regular one because you don't need to share it with others.

  • You can find this hosting great if you own multiple websites, or multiple businesses, with various products. Cpanel is a useful way for even novice users to configure and control their website.
  • The hosting is usually a hidden fee until you're halfway finished the registration process. These can get pricey, so you should try to plan ahead and find a good vendor to purchase from. A domain should not cost more than $9 annually. Some hosts will require a monthly fee. Depending on this fee, the annual cost could be wide-ranging and may be very expensive.
  • You should always read the TOU before signing up. It could save you a headache later on. There is something shifty if the only way to reach the vendor is by email. They should never ask for personal information like your SIN or your birthday. They should not want any of your Paypal information either.
  • If you're just starting up, try not to spend your entire budget on hosting. You'll end up with a souped-up server that will be costly and basically wasted because you don't have any business yet.
